Doctors can best utilize their time by using digital video and other interactive tools that allow for them to literally show patients what is being discussed during their appointment.

“A study from Manhattan Research found that 71 percent of physicians consider a smartphone essential to their practice and 84 percent said that the Internet is critical to their jobs. Smartphones, tablet PCs and other wireless devices are poised to play a greater role in health care as doctors and patients embrace the mobile Internet, panelists at a mobile health technology conference in Boston said Thursday.”

“The use of mobile devices in health care has expanded in the past five years and will continue to grow as U.S. smartphone use increases, said Harry Wang, director of mobile and health research at Park Associates. By 2015 more than 70 percent of people in the U.S. will own a smartphone, according to a study by his firm,” which is exactly why Physicians need to have a relevant and popular internet presence.

“Smartphones and health care intersect today in the area of applications, he said. His company’s research found that the most commonly used mobile health applications are for fitness and workout programs, nutrition and gathering health news.”

In the near future Medical professionals will benefit from a patient’s ability to download an application to their Smartphone that will serve as a home health tool that will assist them in monitoring specific diseases, disorders and more. For example, patients could use a wireless device to monitor their sleep patterns and transmit data to their doctors over a wireless connection. Dr. Gross explains, “The Sciton Erbium Laser can be used to do two different treatments. The first treatment is something called ProFractional laser resurfacing which drills tiny little holes to the skin. The word “fractional” means that we’re only resurfacing a fraction of the skin’s surface area. This is a treatment that we use for treating acne scars and fine and deep wrinkles and is an excellent way to go ahead and tighten the skin and give it a young and refreshed appearance.”

Dr. Gross continues, “The other treatment that we can do with this laser is something called the Micro Laser Peel. This peel is skin resurfacing that involves literally peeling the skin away layer by layer. The Micro Laser Peel is a procedure that we use for getting rid of brown spots and for tightening pores and also for treating fine lines and wrinkles. The beautiful thing about this machine is that regardless of whether we are doing a Micro Laser Peel or a ProFractional resurfacing, we can set the frequency on the laser to do a deeper , more aggressive treatment for people who have more significant issues or we can do very light, mild mellow treatments for patients whose issues are not as significant. The down time can be one or two days for the lighter treatments and as long as five to six days for the more aggressive treatment.”

Nobel Prize Winner for medicine : Professor Robert Edwards

Professor Robert Edwards awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for medicine.

Cambridge physiologist Prof Edwards, now 85, and the late Patrick Steptoe, a gynaecologic surgeon, developed IVF technology in which egg cells are fertilised outside the body and implanted in the womb. Dr Steptoe died in 1988.

The groundbreaking work led to the birth of the world’s first test tube baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

Mike Macnamee, chief executive of Bourn Hall, near Cambridge, the IVF clinic which Prof Edwards founded, said: ”Bob Edwards is one of our greatest scientists. His inspirational work in the early ’60s led to a breakthrough that has enhanced the lives of millions of people worldwide.

”Bob Edwards is held in great affection by everyone that has worked with him and was treated by him. I am really pleased that my great mentor, colleague and friend has been recognised in this way.”

Prof Edwards has previously said: ”The most important thing in life is having a child. Nothing is more special than a child.”

One of his proudest moments was discovering that 1,000 IVF babies had been born at Bourn Hall since Louise Brown.

He recalled the thrill of relaying this to a seriously ill Dr Steptoe, shortly before Dr Steptoe’s death. ”I’ll never forget the look of joy in his eyes,” Prof Edwards said.
